Project Inquiry
Is circular construction widespread in Ukraine? Who is most interested in reusing structures and materials?

In our research, we examine the components of circular construction practices and propose pilot initiatives.
About
the Project
The research includes a detailed description of 'smart dismantling,' sorting, disposal, reuse, and recycling. Current legislative documents, challenges, and the needs of communities were also analyzed.
Key research findings
  1. Smart demolition practices and material reuse (bricks, concrete, metal) are gaining traction in Ukraine’s reconstruction efforts. - 65.1% of architects use second-hand materials.
  2. Ukraine is gradually integrating circular construction principles into its regulatory framework - Adopting the 2022 Framework Law on Waste Management.
  3. There is a growing awareness of circular practices among practitioners, although market demand and regulation have yet to catch up fully. - 79% of architects recognize circular economy concepts, and 38% initiate material reuse.
  4. The circular economy creates local jobs in demolition, material recovery, and recycling, driving economic growth and strengthening local capacity for circular practices. - Demolition companies in Kyiv process 40,000 m2 per month.
Project Impact
Currently, the implementation of green approaches in Ukraine's reconstruction process is a priority at both local and national levels. Our research informs all stakeholders about the opportunities and challenges in circular construction.

Communities, architects, and organizations can rely on the data and findings of the research to strengthen or initiate circular projects.
